Attuma descends from a tribe of barbaric Atlanteans who are banished from Atlantis ages ago. Attuma was born with increased physical abilities beyond other Atlanteans and quickly becomes the leader of his tribe. With the leadership of his tribe, Attuma swore to retake the city of Atlantis in keeping with an ancient prophecy. The first time Attuma rallies his troops to attack Atlantis he is swiftly repelled by Namor and the Fantastic Four. In defeat, Namor once again banishes Attuma and his followers who proceed to rage war against both Atlantis and the “surface world.” During these adventures, Attuma has battled Iron Man, the Avengers, the Defenders and even Dr. Doom. He has also worked alongside Dr. Doom, Red Ghost, Dr. Dorcas and Tiger Shark.

Eventually, when the ruling Council of Atlantis asks Namor to abdicate the throne, and he obliges, Attuma is able to finally take the throne for himself and end the ongoing Atlantean civil war. To spite Namor, Attuma kidnaps the Sub-Mariner's wife Marrina Smallwood. Namor, alongside Alpha Flight and the Avengers, sieges Attuma's Atlantis and saves Marrina. Seeing how truly happy Namor is, Attuma agrees to leave Atlantis and never return. However, he turns his ire towards the surface heroes and joins the Lethal Legion while seeking revenge. This team ends quickly and Attuma finds himself alongside reserve Avengers while battling the High Evolutionary.

When the Serpent, god of fear, summons the seven hammers of the Worthy, one lands near Attuma. Lifting it with ease, Attuma is transformed into Nerkodd: Breaker of Oceans. He battles both Alpha Flight and Namor with his new found power.
