While in prison, prisoner 234026 reads a newspaper article about Batman. For some reason, this man decides to set himself up as the “anti-Batman” and offers his services to Gotham City's criminals to help them avoid capture by the police. After his release, he builds himself a Mothcave based on the photos of the Batcave from the article.
The prisoner also creates a false identity as millionaire philanthropist Cameron van Cleer and becomes friends with Bruce Wayne. He promotes himself to Gotham's underworld by giving them all an infra-red Moth-signal. He soon helps a group of criminals escape the police before using his Mothmobile to defeat and capture Batman and Robin. The dynamic duo escape and lead Killer Moth to the Gotham Bridge where he is defeated.
Soon, Killer Moth kidnaps Bruce Wayne and learns his secret identity as Batman. Other criminals shoot Moth, however, and the injury causes amnesia. He continues to battle the Bat family and is the first criminal that Batgirl defeats.
Prisoner 234026 is really named Drury Walker, a small time crook that no one fears or takes seriously. He decides to again create the cover identity of Cameron van Cleer and alter-ego of Killer Moth. He creates a team called the Misfits comprised of memebers such as Catman and Calendar Man that kidnap Bruce Wayne and other Gotham socialites. The team falls apart, however, when they learn that he plans to kill the hostages.
He later sells his soul to Neron and becomes a giant moth monster called Charaxes. Charaxes eats humans and spins cocoons. Some time later he begins laying hundreds of eggs that hatch into duplicates of Drury Walker. Charaxes, consumed by the power, hates these reminders of his human self but is unable to destroy them. He is later captured along with these duplicates and after they attack a scientist, they are all executed.
During Infinite Crisis, Superboy-Prime encounters Charaxes during the Battle of Metropolis and rips him in half.
