Thaddeus Bach is a promising Peacekeeper, quickly moving up the ranks of Eidolon Elite. He soon catches the attention of Quartermaster Temple and is recruited into the Wrath, an elite unit of the Eidolon that only the best of the best are allowed to join. While this thrills Thad, the dangerous missions concern his wife, Elua.
During a mission to meet a weapons dealer, Thad is horrified to witness Temple kill the alien in cold blood in order to steal its weapons and money. When Thad voices this concern, Temple reassures him that he Psi-judges aren't perfect and the Wrath need to punish evil. He asks for five cycles from Thad and after that, Temple will allow Thad to retire.
Thad doesn't trust his crooked superior and tries to wake his wife so that they can escape immediately. Unfortunately, Temple also doesn't trust Thad and has two Wrath officers follow Thad home and kidnap both Thad and his pregnant wife. Thad awakens, badly beaten, with Temple standing over him and saying how disappointed he is. Temple reveals that he was also forced to kill Elua. Enraged, Thad attacks his former allies and is shot before being further beaten. The Wrath leave Thad stranded on the Ghost Planet, expecting him to soon die. Temple announces that Officer Bach and his family were tragically killed in the line of duty.
Thad is just barely rescued from the edge of death by an alien calling himself, Salomon. Salomon nurses Thad back to health over the course of a space month. Once Thad is healthy, Salomon reveals his shameful secret: he was born onto a planet plunged into war. Hoping to end the war in a righteous fashion, he creates weapons so powerful they lead to the death and destruction of everyone on his home planet, now known as the Ghost Planet. Thad finds himself in a part of the structure he did not recognize and sees a star ship as well as arm bands. Thad asks if they still work and though Salomon pleads for Thad to follow the path of peace, he does not stop Thad from donning the power bands, cape and cowl, giving birth to Space Ghost.
Space Ghost begins to pursue the members of the Wrath but is interrupted by a Zorathian invasion led by Zorak. Space Ghost fights Zorak, discovering two prisoners named Jan and Jayce. Space Ghost rescues the two young prisoners and continues his pursuit of the Wrath, even as Temple forges an alliance with Zorak. Faced with the consequences of his revenge, Space Ghost realizes that no amount of vengeance will bring his family back.
He defeats Zorak, brings the Wrath to justice, and adopts Jayce and Jan as his wards. The trio go off and form a few family that seek to bring justice to space. The three would go on to do battle with an escaped Zorak, a race of lizard people that traffic in human beings, Black Widow, Creature King, Metallus, Brak and Moltar.
Legend has it that Space Ghost loses his mind at some point and captures most of his villains and uses his powers to force them to take part in a late night talk show. Moltar and Zorak are his most consistent victims, while the others are forced to play audience to his mad theatrics.
