Dexter is a simple blue house cat of Earth adopted from the Brooklyn Animal Shelter. Dexter's owner loved the little cat because he is always there to keep her company. She tells Dexter at one point that he makes her life better and she's sure that he would say the same back, if he could talk. Dexter proves his love when a burglar breaks into their home by attacking and scratching the invader. This wakes up Dexter's owner who calls for help that never arrives.

The next morning, Dexter is kicked out of his home by cops afraid that he will contaminate the crime scene. Dexter is forced to live in a box in an alley until two lowlifes trick him into a bag. They take him to the Brooklyn Bridge and attempt to drown him in the bag. However, the rage at these two pieces of scum and those that murdered his owner draws a Red Power Ring to him.

Fueled by rage, Dexter adopts the new name of Dex-Starr and exacts revenge on the two men that tried to kill him. He then tracks down the burglar and kills him as well, keeping their skulls as trophies in a subway station.

Dex-Starr eventually joins the other Red Lanterns and Lantern Corps in battling the Black Lanterns. Dex-Starr even battles the Anti-Monitor while it is trapped inside the Black Power Battery.

Later, Dex-Starr spends time with Atrocitus on Earth, observing the people and world. The pair confront a pair of robbers, one of whom Dex-Starr incinerates. While Atrocitus tries to divine something from the corpse of the thieves, Dex-Starr nibbles on the other. Hal Jordan, rudely, kicks Dex-Starr away with a construct. Soon after, Dex-Starr also fights Dawg and easily bests him.

Some time later, Dex-Star is flying through Space Sector 666 and comes across some sadistic aliens that enjoy torturing for sport. He attacks them but is overwhelmed and injured until Atrocitus arrives and saves him. Atrocitus takes Dex-Starr back to Ysmault to allow the cat time to heal.

Dex-Starr adopts Atrocitus as his master and allows the alien to pet him as well as guarding Krona's corpose. When Bleez and Atrocitus battle each other, Dex-Starr takes Atrocitus' side.
