Jack is a simple every man that is constantly bullied and abused by most people around him. He feels that his luck is finally turning around when he meets and falls in love with Evelyn Dent. The two seem to be building a life until poor Evelyn's psyche fractures and the mental health issues are too much for the relationship to bear. Jack rededicates himself to being a comedian, albeit not a very good one, getting most of his time at the Last Laugh comedy club. Until the day he is witness to the club owner's murder at the hands of Owlman.
Sick of his lot in life, Jack completely rebuilds his act and focuses all of his jokes on Owlman. Manager Harley Quinn helps Jack become a folk hero to the working populace of Gotham, ridiculing every aspect of Owlman. Owlman is not a man to stand disrespect and retaliates by killing Harley Quinna and slicing Jack's mouth open.
This attack is the proverbial “straw that broke the camel's back.” Jack loses whatever is left of his sanity and becomes the Jokester, dedicating his every waking moment to ruining and humiliating Owlman. After years of going back and forth with Owlman, Jokester finds a home in the Riddler family and is able to reconnect with Evelyn Dent, marrying her and together having a daughter named Duela.
When Donna Troy, Jason Todd and Kyle Rayner from New Earth arrive on Earth-3 to attack the Crime Society, Jokester helps them and journeys with them to Earth-8. There they are immediately captured by Lord Havok and the Extremists. The quartet are able to escape Lord Havok only to run smack dab into the Monitor, Solomon.
Solomon proclaims judgment that he will executed these “Earth-hoppers” just as he did Duela Dent on New Earth. Jokester is enraged by the news of his daughter's death and immediately moves to attack Solomon, only to be outflanked and killed by a shot to the back.
